Scrawl comes in from data.searchirc.org It autojoins the network and will ONLY join a channel if there is a forced join, and in that case it parts immediately.

The only time you'll see someone from SearchIRC is if we need to verify data for a new network, or investigate a complaint (such as faking userbase). We get whatever we need without joining channels. Jason and I ALWAYS use a searchirc.com or .org domain.

Another point to remember is all the scrawl bots have ident enabled so not one will get a ~ in front of its ident. Smile

And im pretty sure real SearchIRC staff do the same.

Admitedly thats not a 100% safe idicator but it pretty much rules out imposters who dont have ident enabled.

Not to mention i've never seen a scraw; bot with the ident scrawler yet.

Jobe, I'm afraid its not a good indicator. I have identd enabled and still get the ~ on some servers.

I would say, if you have to ask - it's likely fake.

The bot shouldn't join channels or say anything. We rarely visit networks either - network admin access is now automated. Network addition is researched by a robot as well.

It needs a searchirc.com/.org domain, or your money back.

You've really got to ask what morons who do things like that gain from it anyway. All they manage to do is say a few things with no evidence/backup proving what they say anything. Most of us wouldnt even worry about it being said anyway.

Usually its a takeover tactic, just like faking an oper's name. But in this case it looks like they were just trying to yank some chains.

Ill add to the point by saying as far as i know and understand SearchIRC staff will never ask for special access (including olines) to any network.
