Has anyone ran an open-link network? Has anyone heard of an open-link network before? IE, the link blocks with a simple password that everyone knows and allows any ip to link up? I'm bored and thinking of opening up an open-link irc network or something and see what comes of it Wink

really? i didn't know efnet allowed any server to link up. i heard that long, long ago back in the "olden days" of irc that people had to use C/N lines to connect to irc? or something like that?

or maybe i have my history horribly wrong? Surprised

long long ago?? .... olden days?? .. way back?? .. your history wrong?? ..

Try it's still practiced today! C/N lines are what allows servers to connect. Not all daemons have bind style conf files with link blocks.

well, theres 2 steps i could take with that

either

1. Trust people not to be entirely abusive

or

2. Modify bahamut or unreal and take out global powers Surprised

hmm... any thoughts on what ircd i should use? im thinking of using unreal and having my friendly c-programming friend take out the global oper abilities.

If no one has global powers then your asking for even more trouble since then a legit /kill could only happen in your server. No offence, but it's plainly obvious you haven't thought this through.

Using unreal?.. don't forget to make vanilla Unreal incompatible ... also there is this little thing called a server numeric.

Besides .. I thought you was done with running a server/network?

im bored, and decided to try this idea.

And yes I've thought it through, heres what I am going to do:

Hub IP, server numeric of the hub, services server name, network cloak keys, and hidden host prefix will be on the network's website, along with instructions on how to link up.

ALL global kill and kline powers will be stripped upon oper by services. the server admins will be in full charge of their own server (opers, local kill, and local kline wise). The only opers with global abilities will be the ones that are SRA's on services.

Reread my post. Anet used to allow any server to link, it was chaos. Anarchy ;)

EFnet formed as an alternative to it, Anet died. EFnet survived for a reason.

nah, i think it'll be a good idea.

i already have links on the network and it hasnt even "officially" opened yet, cause the anope module hasnt been finished and the domain hasnt propagated yet.

I'll post the website address in here once the domain propagates and the anope module is finished, and it'll officially be open to the public Very Happy
