| No matter where i go it seems on IRC there is racism in one form or another, i do not understand why peoples slanted views on race seems to thrive on IRC. What do you think about the racism on IRC? Should it be left as irc is ment to be an unmoderated medium or do you think we as network admins, ircops and just users should try and stamp this out? |

Racism exists due to intolerance. It's only more visible on IRC because of the anonymity it provides (supposedly). You should deal with racism how you feel comfortable - you may feel that 'jokes' are tolerable but incitement is inappropriate. If it's your network, make your own rules up about what you personally believe - but make it clear what is allowed and what isn't.

| How can there be racism? I can't tell the color of your skin or your ethnicity unless you TELL me. These days with hidden IPs and proxies its often impossible for one user to even tell the country of another user. |

| well, the internet is a place for freedom of speech where most laws in the real world dont apply but i believe ppl should respect more on this matter and keep their racist remarks out of a place where we all are pretty much faceless |

| Racism exists on IRC mregit because people discuss about their hate for other races and stuff like that. i agree that people should keep their racist remarks to themselfs, it has no place on IRC imho. |

as long as there are uneducated people out there in the real world then irc is just another forum for people to show off their lack of intelligence. We just see those hypocrite's a little more clearly due to their over confidence and they can hide behind a keyboard - if you meet these ppl in real life i doubt very much that they would express themselves as freely.
plus that's what Gerry Springer is for ... just redirect them to that show ... the media loves exposing these morons.

You bring up a very good point. IRC has long been a fortress protecting liberal freedom of expression. Yet few would argue that some ideas - and racism is an excellent example - can be so dangerous they must be supressed.
Where's the line? At what point does freedom of speech end and righteous intolerance begin? And, whose job is it to clamp down on unwelcome behavior if self censorship doesn't work? |

| I think we should take it upon ourselfs to stamp our racism from our networks or channels. There is no excuse for letting this happen imo. We should stop it now. |

there's a subset of people you're ignoring.
people who use racism as a tool to highlight the ignorance of others.
not everyone who makes a racist comment actually means it.
and please, bear in mind, words have different meanings to different people.
eg : to most people ''nigger'' means someone who's black.
to me, ''nigger'' means anyone who's obsessed with this stupid 'thuglife' lifestyle, white, black, latino or wtfe colour their skin may be.
and, racism against the english...
deal with it. it's well deserved.
racism against muslims?
religious bias is part of the very nature of most religions, you can't avoid it.
some people can move beyond it, but it's never avoidable completely..
stamping things out isn't the way to get past things.
that which people try to stamp out often grows stronger (rome and crhistianity anyone? ) |

| So what do you suggest? Let everyone talk shit about other and our own races because it wont stop? Yeh that sounds like a great idea... Robert-E-Lee as i told you before i'm not proud of my race which is why i do not say i'm British. Because as you said, against the UK it's well deserved i would like to distance myself from it. |

no, but not one peron ever looks at the comments people make, and asks why they make them, what's brought them to thinking as they do?
people always simply say ''these comments are unnaceptable'' '' we must stop them '' then go looking for punitive measures to do so with.
punitive measures don't usually fill people with a desire to NOT do something again, they fill them with anger at being punished, and make them feel that their actions are 'righteous' in some way. try finding out why people think as they do, and addressing the causes, not the symptoms. until then? prove yourself the 'better man', and ignore them. |

Most racism is stemmed from a stereotype. Case in point: if you were to see an african american driving a Lamborghini Diablo SV -- what's your first thought? He musta stolen it?
It is these stereotypes pushed upon us by our peers and our elders that make us think for or against a certain class of people. Racism isn't the only issue on IRC either, to a degree, there is also sexism present on a fair few networks.
From a practical point of view, there is little that can be done about biased slurs against classes of people other than reminding those who do incite such bias that they are ignorant fools who basically have a closed mind. A human is a human, irrelevant of any disabilities they may have, what color they are, what god they worship or where they live.
