Hi guys, do any other you people play MMPG (Massive Multi-Player Game) like Utopia, or raece ?
If you do, are any of you guys members of KLA (Kaer Loche Alliance).
Don't flame me for asking. |

Back in 1998, I started to develop an online IRC RPG.
The program connects to an IRC network as a server, so it can spawn monsters and characters within channels. Since it was a server, it could then monitor user's joins/parts. Each channel was an "area" within the game. As you (in your IRC client) moved between channels, your in game character would follow. All channels were +m, so in order to talk, you'd talk as your character (who are all voiced).
Whenever you'd join a channel, the "map" was displayed to you, so you'd be able to visually see where you could go from your current location. If you joined a room that wasn't next to you (ie; if you went into the castle when you were last in the rest room of the bar), your character would remain in it's last location. Basically, you had to move around as if you were really in a given location.
I only worked on it for a short time, but many things were done ... basically, if someone knew how to code in C, they could pick off where I left off, and write in the battle sequences. Then it'd be playable.

whats the point of irc rpg when there is such a great thing as MUD. =)
some muds have 10s of "gods" who work on improving it every day and to make a RPG on irc would take a hell lot of work.
It's just not worth it too.
Play MUD =] |

I've been on MUDs for probably over 10 years now on and off. Also played EverQuest for 2 years, and guided for one.
Now I play on a NWN persistant world, called Daggerford. Very roleplay intensive. In a word - awesome.

I have a friend who is designing a MUD based off "Forgotten Realms" but I think its still a work in progress.
I thought IRCd was complex, then I saw the code he was messing with. No thanks! I don't have that kind of patience. |
