An ever increasing occurance on this forum:
spam

In the past few weeks, I have noticed threads starting up that ask sIRC users to come to another forum and user accounts started with URLs that point to porn sites

I suggest that new registrations must be approved by a sIRC forum admin so that the trash can be filtered. I think its safe to assume that each user on this site is sick to death of the spam they receive by other media (email, spam on thier networks, etc) and would hardly want to see it creep its way into a good forum.

Something needs to be done yes but i doubt very much the admins have time for this. Maybe the admins should recruit more lower-level moderators from the userbase and allocate this task to them. By limiting their power to only move bad posts to a 'sin-bin' (readable by moderators and admins only) they would be able to make sure such moderators cannot do any permenant damage to the forum.

If they are automated spam bots they can always use a verification image which contains a random seed.

Automated spam bots are not a problem on SearchIRC, not at the moment anyway.

All such instances of spam are dealt with as quickly as possible by the moderators.

Yeah, the idea on administrative registration activation "could" help a little bit, but all that would help would be spam "bots" that auto register on forums and are coded to automaticly post shit, but whether an admin of SearchIRC were to activate an account for you, would do no good, not like the admins are going to know he/she is going to spam all over the forum, and no one is stupid enough to just say "im here to spam porn all over your forums" ya know? So really its just a POE ( Process of elimination) that is needed in my opinion. Like someone else on this post said, just get some lower level mods or write some kind of coding for porn filters/spam or something?

If we had it my way, there would be no Network Announcements forum, and it would be prohibited that any "Needs [insert users, links, admins, etc here]" messages be posted. And of course, no irrelevant mentioning of your network name. But that's just me. And I don't make the rules. I just try to enforce the rules.

Well, from what I see SearchIRC is dedicated to IRC and helping networks advertise and become bigger/better. If we didnt have a place to talk about our networks and such, why would SearchIRC even exist?

Why does it seem to exist now? At least, why do these forums exist. All I seem to have seen over the past year or so is hate and trolling-- come on sIRC, let's lift our game!

SearchIRC is here as a way to get users to networks.

On that line of thought, helping networks get users is basically the same thing.

I can't control the attitude of those who choose to post, but can and will ban people if they don't follow the rules.

As far as this topic goes, I don't see much real spam, so I'm not sure what the issue is - unless this is about future possible issues. In which case there might be a hurricane and or tsunami coming, so you should start boarding up your house :)

It isn't really that much spam on this forum, what it is really is a lot of is that people tend to attack people on a thread by calling someone names, etc... which in the end makes the thread locked.

The problem here right now is...

...I can't remember the last time I saw a new netadmin (or old) post something and he/she wasn't attacked by the regulars about something they did on thier OWN network.

And talking about getting my way...I reckon the way to fix it, is to get rid of all the ones that spend thier time writing stupid reviews, slagging everything off possible about a network and its admin and lets start these forums again how it USED to be without the vigilantes.

And also....as I know Ed was once looking into, I'd make the network announcement forums creater reply only, so there would be no need to review it and tell everyone how shit it is.

That would work but its not just in the network announcement it happend, people attack and write stupid comments everywhere, whether its a network seeking for Users/Staff on Help Wanted.

It should instead be some kind of filter to prevent people from writing stupid comments like "You suck" or even worse as I have seen.

Also just something that comes to my mind, when someone goes in to the network announcement and makes stupid comments the thread is being locked, how come the person who made the thread have to pay for it? Wouldn't it be better to ban some people instead?

To be quite honest i would agree with JohnB, the forums where alot better back in the day but it does just show you what sort of people the up and coming net admins are. Oh well.. I would love SearchIRC to be back how it was, however i do not see that happening.

As clarification, my comments are meant to be more in satire than anything else. If we had no advertising, no help wanted posts, etc... I wouldn't have to bother looking at the forums much at all ;)

I do believe there is an issue where almost every single new thread in the Network Announcements forum is getting hounded by other users. Constructive criticism is fine, flaming is not.
