I'm trying to use mirc from work but mirc doesn't pick up my internet connection even though i can browse and check email no problem. I understand that it's probably due to the firewall here installed on the network blocking ports used by mirc, but is there a way around this other than using a web based irc client?

No - you should contact the network administrator if you need to use IRC - (s)he can open the appropriate ports on the firewall.

you could try using HTTPort 3.SNFM http://www.htthost.com/httport.boa
to tunnel through a port 80 proxy but it does slow you down alot |

If they are blocking the ports, most likely, it is because they don't want you using IRC. If you could circumvent the firewall (even by using a webchat), that probably means you are putting your job at risk. I know if I hired you, and you broke my company's rules, I wouldn't keep you around... |

| another option is a program known as 'antifirewall' i hear varying reports on its effectiveness, so it's not guaranteed. |

I don't think it really matters how you break the rules, just that you are breaking the rules. |

I agree with the others that are saying that the company does not want you to be using it, yet there may be other cases that users may want to use this.. I can't really think of one but hey, thats not my job.
One way to get around this is to setup a Remote Desktop Server on your home pc then when you are at work you can connect to your computer and control it. I believe someone said VNC, VNC is also like the windows remote desktop and would also work. Their website is www.realvnc.com.
Another way would be to connect to a proxy and have it connect to the server for you. If you have your own box then I would suggest you setting up psybnc or bnc on it, that way it will be more stable and you will not have to worry about other users using the same proxy.
Yet it would be a bad idea to do this if your work does not want you on IRC there must be a reason.. It might just be that they don't want you talking to other people like some jobs don't want you having a cell phone or having it on. I decided to post this because this may be helpfull to other users that are in other cases than just this. |

Actually, you should just respect your company's wishes. |

My company wishes? They dont mind as long as the work is done.
But if he gets fired thats his job not ours mate, so why are you worrying. he asked for a solution to it, not a lecture of life and how to do is work when you got your own to be thinking about. |

| mouselike, perhaps to you "just don't do it" is a lecture, however, it's not to any grown-ups I know. |
