I know this is nothing new, but there seems to be a renowned effort to step up the monitoring of chat rooms by local police. A group of police forces from four (4) countries have started watching chat rooms for potentially harmful chatter. One news site reports the ability for the police to send a special symbol to users in the chatroom to notify that they are being logged. (I assume this is with AOL/Y!/etc.-style chatrooms, and they have some kind of deal with those respective companies?) The police are also now working to get banks to freeze credit cards of paedophiles trying to pay for child pornography.

theres a stepped up effort up north here too, in norway sweden and denmark 105 ppl where arrested 3 weeks ago among them was 3 policemen, and the youngest ones was 2 15 year olds.
They where tracked through chatrooms and payment sites using creditcards |

They can be.
A 15 year old was sending out pics of herself. She has been charged with sexual abuse of children, possession of child pornography and dissemination of child pornography.

See, I'm utterly opposed to child pornography and pedophiles in general, but I really think that the way law enforcement can easily over-react to these things is also a problem... even if there's flimsy evidence of wrongdoing, you could easily wind up with your property being stolen by the police as evidence , your name is ruined, etc.
I mean, hell, I was quaking in fear once because of an automated +kb message from accidentally being in the wrong channel at the wrong time. LIterally, the message was "pedo channels get you banned here, police have been informed" because I was in a private channel that a friend of mine uses. He names the channel after himself and because it has the name "boy" in it, well, BAM. Ugh.
Where is the proper medium, really? |

Just because your IP was logged and/or reported don't mean your going to have the cops beating in your door any second. There must be repeated instances and proof that you are doing something wrong.
I've seen that same tactic used in pop-up ads just to get you to buy some kind of cookie clean app. |

So wait.. Lets say I'm 14 years old.. I can get arrested for owning a nude picture of myself? And if I touch myself in the picture, I get charged with sexual abuse?
Thats just plain fucked up.. |

| No, not quite. You can only be arrested if you distribute the pornography (and I suppose if you possess it). It's kind of hard to abuse yourself... |
