Now leave please. I have no interest in being a part of your search. I was not asked and I do not like it and want removed. I would also like for you to tell me the IP/Host of you bot so I can be sure to NEVER be listed on your 'service' again..

Thank you..

outch thats a little harsh, but if you want it done go to irc.searchirc.com, tell them in there to stop spidering your site instead of complaining about it here.

It is in no way harsh. Harsh is to spider networks without so much as saying hello to the administration. If I wanted the content of my network splayed to html and searchable I'd bloody damn well do it myself!

Of all the ignorance! You are doing IRC no favor!

I woke up to that post and several emails from Diego, and before I had a chance to respond he visited #searchirc Rest assured he is even more charming and personable in conversation.

He identified his network to me in email. It is one we have listed since last May. The submission form was filled out by someone with intimate knowledge of the network, but another person was listed as admin. The network has around 100 users, so it would be very easy for any member of the staff to identify the indexer and contact us or ban it.

We found out the hard way that "remove my network" demands are almost always an act of revenge by ex-admins, disgruntled IRC ops, rival networks, etc. We used to comply, only to have the real admin contact us wanting to know why we removed them!

If a network does not want to be indexed, they ban us. Its THAT simple. The indexer tells us its banned, and Jason will email the admin asking if the ban is accidental (they almost always are) or if they really don't want to be indexed. If a network doesn't welcome new users, the last thing we want to do is send people who visit SearchIRC their way.

The third item on the FAQ is:
What nickname and hosts does your robot use?

Google "diego netadmin" and the fourth one down is:

www.naphoriamembers.com/Naphoria%20Members-3.htm

If the Napster cloner and his Warez Queen wife don't want publicity maybe they should look in the mirror before pointing fingers.

We really do need proof that the network does not want to be indexed. As Mary said, we've encountered about a half dozen cases where a disgruntled ex-admin or ex-oper wanted to get revenge and one of the ways they try is by getting a network removed from SearchIRC. If you're the admin there you should have no problem banning the robot, which will let us know to remove your network, especially if the ban message is descriptive.

I ceases to amaze me that some people would stoop to this level. The way i see if you dont want people to know about your network dont let in open connections The fact is.. I could simply join anyone's network run a /links , /quote version , and /motd and put them on any website i wanted really, maybe even tell all my friends.

Yes you need to respect privacy... but if you expect privacy dont complain about it if anyone and their dog can find out about or connect to you.

Want to tell your friends, fine. Feel free. We are an open network. But does that mean I want a spider bot logging my network for an online search tool by people who didn't even take the time to say hello?

I find your assumptions on my hobby to be rude in the least.

Want proof I do not want to be indexed? Come on and join opers..

I found your channels listed SEVEN different places on the web, including -
http://irc.netsplit.de/channels/?net=CTCP&num=0&query=opers

Details of IRC network
'CTCP'
submitted at 2001-07-08

Last contact...
Host: ni.uk.ctcp.net (irc.ctcp.net) Date: 2004-02-19, 17:03 (gmt)

You submitted your network to that site in 2001 and its still being listed today. But you don't want SearchIRC on your network. Sounds personal to me.

And so I will say it again, in yet more varied terms, so that you might yet grasp the concept: I did not come to you and you did not come to me, and yet my network was spidered by you and appears on your search. I feel this was an arrogant move on your part and so want nothing to do with you.

And the comment that the spider has been visiting the network for some months? Do any of you watch every user who joins? That I did not notice your bot is no excuse for its presence any more than my acceptance of one type of bot insists I should accept them all.

And so, again, catch yourselves on..

Why yes, it is personal. I personally decided to do one thing and to not allow another thing to be done to me without my knowledge or consent. Is this really so hard a concept for you to grasp?
