Something to keep in mind if you plan on using a different port for IRC:
From our help section ( http://searchirc.com/help.php?id=146 ):
Can I be listed if my network doesn't use port 6667?
No. We require all networks to allow our indexer (and therefore users) to connect to port 6667. If another network is running on port 6667, and you are on port 6668 - we will not list the second network.
------
If you submit your network and we cannot connect to 6667 it will be rejected. If you are already listed and we can no longer connect to 6667 your network will be marked inactive, your data will not appear and your channels will not be listed. Users who select our irc:// link or java client will not be able to connect to your network as it is set to the standard IRC default port of 6667. |

Useless facts: The IRC protocol never defined a "default port" for anything. It's just that 6667 is the most popular port.
There has never been an official 7000 for services. In fact 4400 was used for ircd's long before services was ever invented. Since services connects as an ircd, it would be logical to assume services should also use 4400.
DALnet started using 7000 as their default client port long before anyone ever used it for services. |

To quote wikipedia, although the protocol didn't define a 'default port', IANA did assign one:
| http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat wrote: | | IRC was originally a plain text protocol (although later extended), which on request was assigned port 194/TCP by IANA. However, the de facto has always been to run IRC on 6667/TCP and nearby port numbers to avoid having to run the IRCd software with root privileges. It is possible (though quite inconvenient) to use IRC via a basic byte-stream client such as netcat or telnet. |
