hello,
well last year we spoke about categorizing the regional networks into geographical areas. like North American, Middle East, Asia etc
And you did.
But we cant still not browse networks by areas.
So my question is when will that will be possible? |

Wouldnt that be an issue where networks more or less often end up scattered all over the world at some point.
i.e Austnet, they were primarly a australian based network, but extended beyond. The same would go for other networks which extend their links outside their country or continent.
I can see how it would be useful however and baring that the networks keep it to their geographical locations and update them regularly or even the scrawl bot it may not be as bad. |

but still. you can put this net as International or World wild or whatever.. We must be able to browse networks by geographical locations.
btw austnet has still over 70% of its users aussies.. which makes this net sort of australian network. |

Well the current regional categorization says to select the region where "most" of your users are from, not where the servers are located.
So I see no problem with the idea of being able to browse by region so you can see networks who's users are in the same region as you. |

| I don't mean to hijack this thread but is there a possibility of looking into sorting networks by services and IRCds? That plays a big factor for me personally in choosing which networks I connect to. |

This has been discussed many times before and voted against by most network admins and/or SIRC staff because of the possibility of a malicious user that knows an unreported exploit to a specific software package from getting a complete list of networks to exploit. |

I understand possibilities like these can occur, but you can't prevent and account for every situation. First off, the IRCd already is displayed when you view the servers for the particular network. As for services, I don't think it would be a big deal either.
It would be just as easy for this malicious user to exploit networks from the list of 50+ who have the Anope service. They would just connect to every one, and if the network has that type of software, it will work. If the network doesn't, the attack would fail. The point I am trying to make is that the focus should be on improving the experience for the community, not preventing that one malicious user.
In addition, there can be options for network reps to be listed under these categories like there are already. If I don't want to be listed under a particular service, I won't check that option. |

The point is, why make it easier for attackers?
Thats like posting your shell password right here on the forum. Well not quite, but can be compared to it. |

By your own logic then it's just as easy for you to get the list you desire. So since it's so easy for malicious users to get the list as you claim, then it's just as easy for you as a non-malicious user to get the same list, thus no new feature is needed. |

You were done with it, so technically, it wasn't hijacked. |
