There are many types of IRCd's out there, and I'm just wondering, what are the advantages and disadvantages of these different IRCd's?

alot is down to personal preference more than anythin else

unrealircd is liked for its fetures, modes, filters etc
inspircd for its module support
and the likes of ircu / hybrid for its stable user load handling

yeah.. You must try all the ircd then take a choice, Personally I've tested all the IRCDs and I love InspIRCd, because I can disable and enable some modules which I don't like, such +a or +Q. EFnet's IRCD has some cool features too, like decide users from .fr to connect to a .fr's server. Anyway, you should try all the ircds!. Good luck.

This is probably me just being picky but i highly doubt you've tested all IRCd's. There are many out there that i've only just recently heard of. And i'm pretty certain there are many out there which you probably havn't heard of either.

The best comparison (in my experience) is sampling the ones you think do what you want them to do... ask yourself this: what exactly do you want out of an IRCd? Do you want host masking? how about vHosts? What kind of support (in terms of help channels, operating system and services) does the IRCd need to have, and has already?

Wikipedia has an article comparing the various IRCds available... could be worth a read

I really like charybdis. It has a good amount of features, module support, and proven stability. It's based on ircd-ratbox.

At the risk of starting a flamewar....WHOIS notification is one of the most awful and useless features ever.

Personally i dont think WHOIS notification is that bad an idea but i do hate oeprs who /kill or even ban anyone just for /whois'ing them. As an Oper it is almost garunteed you will get /whois'ed whether you like it or not.

okay, I might be looked upon as "lame" or "n00bish" for admitting this (and get the f*ck over it, those who call me that)... but yes, I do have a script that catches the "has done a /whois on you" server notice. But hey, all it does is reply with a random line via /notice - nothing special, but since I have received little (if not nothing) in the complaints dept I guess I'll hang onto this script
