I would like to know everyone's thoughts on a network forcing connecting users to a "welcome" channel.

Personally, forced join in anyway shouldn't happen.

No forced joins. They screw up bots, not to mention they are annoying.

It's just like when I was first IRCop, I typed: /oper Spektral mypass, and I auto-joined #staff. Heh, no big deal. =\

Sorry I should have been more clear in my post I see. What I said was when a user connects and before doing any other command, is automatically joined to a channel.

Honestly? I find it rude because a user is forced to join a channel before he even has a chance to look at the network.

I usually type /list and if I see any warez channels or some random idiocity, I usually leave.

As soon as a user is forced into a channel, it immediatly gives a user a feeling that his/her privacy isn't respected much.

Mabye someone connects to PM a friend, not join a channel. It should always be the user's choice whether he wants to join or not.

If you want users to know what's the "official" channel, mabye just put it in the motd or services' "Logon news" or something along that line, but say no to forced joins!

Who ever invented the whole idea of forced join was on crack... If you want someone to join your channel, /invite works just as good.

Yeh it's a dumb idea, if people wanna join a channel they will. Forced joins for opers is a different issue, as forcing them to join the oper chan is common practice.

I think the forced join is a ridiculous option. It is rude to the user and it takes away their "freedom" so to speak. It also diverts users more than it does attract them.

I think it's not bad but it's not excellent, too. If you have 10-50 users auto join channel is useful, but if you have 50+ users, then it will cause problem.

I like my freedom. Being forced to join a channel will likely make me leave that network.

I think that for the most part, it's a bad thing, for the same reasons that you all already posted, but it also can be a good thing on a limited amount of servers. If you want/need total control, then it's a good thing. If you're connecting to a server that is there for one purpose (like to help someone), it's easier to help people if they are all joining the same channel.

I agree, forced joins are very annoying, and it sometimes even rude to be forced to join a channel. In other words, I wouldn't last a week on a network w/a forced join on connect :/

I also think forced joins is bad option, however currently opering on an unreal network i am forced to join a channel upon /oper which doesnt really bother me as its just my staff then, but when its on connect i tend to get rather annoyed and just quit the network.

Most networks do that because they want there opers on a certain channel if something bad happens.......not optional
