I'm no expert at IRCd's. I'm not going to deny it. Heck, I've never seen any daemon's config before. But alas, that's not what brings me here today.
One of the head admins at one of the net's I go to wants to switch ircd (the net is using Raptor, which as far was anyone on there can tell, is antiquated, outdated and lacks some cool features that more modern ircd's have) and services.
His requirements are:
1. The config can't look like Unreal's, or else he'll get confused by it . He said, complaining about Unreal's config, "it's an o:line not an o:paragraph"
2. It suports vhosting without a hostserv
3. ChanServ can idle in channels (are there any services that can't do that?)
So does anyone know of an irc/services packages that meets the criteria?
The reason I made this board and not the admin is because I'm cooler than him because I have an account here and he doesn't .[/i] |

ViagraIRCd with Anope services would meet the bill.
You can take a look @ http://www.viagraircd.com |

hmm, UnrealIRCd's conf is confusing? That's a first... If anything, I'd say that it is far more readable than the old lines system.
/* EDIT */
By the way, you can compress an O:Line into one line
| Code: | | oper test { from { userhost *@*; }; flags "..."; modes "..."; password "..."; }; | May not be as readable as having it spread out over a few lines, but it has the same effect |

| ircd-hybrid, charybdis, or ratbox with Atheme Services would be the most similar to your current setup, since RaptorIRCd is a P10 derivitive. |

| Ultimate3 with Anope might suit you as well. I'd say you should test whatever of suggested ircd's and services you like most for yourself, and use those. |

It would be nice if you also said why.... this isn't really constructive. |

I've gotta comment on this...
I'm a complete newbie to running an IRCD and i chose to go with Unreal. I didn't find their config confusing at all. In fact, i found it more explanative than i had first expected it would be. Setup was easy... and they provided an excellent help doc.
Anyone who thinks this IrcD is confusing is nuts! |

The large amount of options it provides may be confusing to new users though... When it comes to something really simple, bahamut 1.8 seems to do the job best. I didn't mention it due to it's block-style config though... |

| I'd recommend good ol' UnrealIRCd with Anope 1.6 services. Unreal is really easy once you get used to it, it's simple to set up and it's a great stable option. I also like Anope services, it's easy to use and it's feature-packed. Tell the netadmin at this network that he/she will love using Unreal once he gets used to it. |

First, bahamut to Unreal is by no means an 'upgrade' - they are two totally different applications.
Secondly, as people seem to have forgotten - he specifically said NO block style configuration formats ala Unreal.
Not having used charybdis, I can't comment. I will say I didn't like bahamut too much, and it seems bahamut-2 is somewhat of vapourware - time will tell.
Personally, (this will surprise some people who know me :p) - I'm liking hybrid-7.1. 7.0 was ugly, but 7.1 seems to be getting there. |

unreal is a really 'cool' ircd for admins and opers...
But it really isn't 'cool' for regular users because it takes their privacy too much and admins have total control over them, (too much control) e.g /sajoin, /sapart, /chgname, /chgident, etc.
I also recommend viagraircd... and mabye the Anope services and on the main website (http://anope.org), there's a module for chanserv, etc. to idle on a channel |
