In case you don't feel like reading that, basically what it's saying is that scientists are now trying to supercede the Internet by creating something called "The Grid" (also referred to as I2 or Internet Mark 2).
I admit that I haven't looked very far into the issue, but from the sound of it this is not going to be a good thing, in my opinion.
First of all, I think just about all of us here would agree that the Internet now is as it was supposed to become, after the idea of using the Internet for a global database became widespread. There's still plenty of room for our current Internet system to evolve.
One major concern I have about this is that of censorship. Again, I haven't looked very far into the matter, but from what I have heard and from a gut feeling it just seems like this is an opportunity for the U.S. to shut down filesharing and squelch out the things it doesn't want to be seen. It sounds to me like filtering the content we'll see on our computers will be easier than ever.
Another concern is the ever-increasing price. The Internet is a great place when you know what to do, and I would say that generally everyone is fairly happy with it. If The Grid became a widespread replacement for the internet, I'm afraid of having all the stuff I normally use moved to it and thus having to upgrade and pay a high price for use of The Grid, and in doing so I think we're in danger of creating a second Bill Gates.
Just wanted to hear y'alls thoughts and opinions here. |

It seems like "The Grid" is nothing more than a core redesign of today's internet. Issues like censorship, pricing, etc dont seem to be mentioned. It is evolution and it is inevitable, but wether or not its just a lot of hype is yet to be seen. It does sound promising though. |

I havn't read the article yet however the name its self "The Grid" sounds rather menacing.. |

"The Grid will not only enable sharing of documents and MP3 files" that seems highly illogical for the development of opensource and legal free music however the prevention on the development of opensource is naturally what they want.
I do not see "The Grid" coming to our homes any time in the next 10 years atleast, i doubt the internet as we know it will dissapear for a long while yet. |

It doesn't matter what comes out, it has to attract userbase in order to be successful. If it's got things that limit what users can do, and users dislike that functionality, it will die a quick death.
I am just waiting around until everyone uses IP6. I can't wait till my toaster has it's own IP address. |

Yes, but my concern is that it will turn out to be like Windows. How many people do you know who are experienced computer users who would recommend Windows? I'd wager none. And still, Windows is by far the most used operating system and businesses now have almost no choice but to use it (or maybe MacOS, which is second worst IMO) since everyone is so used to it and most people refuse to learn to change.
The problem is if censorship occurs, the U.S. would most likely only take out one or two top-priority things to keep us happy.
When you think about the majority of people who use the Internet, most of them would be happy just with an e-mail address and the ability to use Google and Yahoo. To me it seems that were they to elliminate filesharing, enough people would not care that the userbase would be just large enough to keep it going. Then, over time, as the old Internet dies off and The Grid evolves, people would be forced to switch to The Grid and there would be nothing to do about censorship...
I might be paranoid about this, but redoing the entire Internet would definitly be an opportunity for the government to "fix" some "flaws" which many of us enjoy in the old Internet. |
