OK, this may be one of the most noobish questions of all time, but how do I get it so that people can connect to my server as irc.happy.org or whatever instead of 1.23.456.789?
If it's any different for HTTP servers I'd like to know that to (so they don't have to type http://1.23.456.789:80 to get onto my website). Yes I know about buying pre-registered domains, but if a company can do it, so can I, and I'd like to know how, even if my computer is incapable of it or whatever. |

You need to use a service like zoneedit.org,
and add an 'A' record for irc.happy.org to whatever IP your ircd is running on.

| Well, first you will need to buy a domain - from someone like Godaddy. Then (like Ashen said) you'll need a DNS server. ZoneEdit and EveryDNS are both good options for that. |

Hmm well since I will soon have access to a T3 there is no way I can host my own DNS server?
And also, how do these companies get the domains? Is there no possible way other than going through them? |

You could host your own DNS server. Look into BIND or tinydns. But I highly suggest using a service. You'll want the redudancy that your T3 cannot provide.
No, there is no other way to get a domain except by going through a registrar. ICANN, the organization that basically controls the domain process, gives certain companies the right to register domains. You own the domain, though, and can transfer (change) registrar's whenever you please. |

Actually, he might not be able to. You must have at least two unique IPs for nameservers. So unless he is going to have multiple IPs, he'd still need someone to host at least one server. |

Hmm. Disappointing.
How did ICANN get control over this buisiness? Why aren't they sued for monopoly?

they're probably not sued, because they're an organisation, not a company.
and, they probably have control, because no one else has the money now, to try and muscle in. |

Register a domain at godaddy.com
Signup for a free zoneedit account at www.zoneedit.com
Then you can point your www.mysite.com address to your website, and have irc.mysite.com go to the same place, or elsewhere, etc |

Finances are really tight |

well... www.afraid.org and www.no-ip.com do that. Just find one available, and point it, and it's done. (note: Afraid is better ) |

You have the hookup for a T3, but can't spend sub-$10 for a domain name?
Also, note that by getting a subdomain from a free service denies you listing in the SearchIRC database. You must have your own domain to be listed on SearchIRC.
ICANN is the organization that runs the domain registering system. It's not a monopoly because they don't sell domains, other companies do. Also, you can't really compare the internet to the regular market. Two completely different mediums. |

Actually, 1 IP will work just fine. you don't have to have 2. I only have 1 name server running on my box and have several domains parked on it and they work just fine with only 1 IP as the name server :p |

Oh...
Sorry guess I should have looked into it before I talked. I thought it was more around $200 for a domain.
Don't know why I thought that...
Thanks all |

Go Daddy has domains as low as $4.99 (.us domains) and has a DNS service - You can point subdomains to different IPs, using different types (A, MX, NS, etc..)
If you need an extended DNS service, try one of the ones mentioned.
Godaddy and Registerfly.com are ones I trust, and are fairly cheap. |
