WebChat, the IRC network sponsored by ConferenceRoom, runs their IRCds on Windows.

i run my server from a windows box services to.

i use unreal. and have had my server up since 2003 and have yet to have one crash from the server itsself.

so no *nix isnt better at runing servers then windows. its abou thow much you know and how you run them.

I've yet to find one single windows box that stable? You have an uptime since 2003? I don't even know of *nix machines that have gone that long without a reboot.

Anyways to each their own -- It's a matter of preference and choice. For security and stability reasons, I will not run an ircd on windows.

actually i only reboot my windows box once everyfew months whenever i actually decide to download thos retarded updated for windows. other then that i never shut it down. server is on the same box i run http from.

windows ircds to me seem the best as i stated. i have had alot of problems with *nix ircds. but services pffft.. they wont run on windows for longer then 3 hours without a crash.. they royally suck Razz

not for me, i ran anope on my box ( windows XP SP1) for.. three months i think it was, without a problem in services themselves, only reason the spell wasn't longer was that the pc itself crashed. anope was stable from initiation to the pc going kerpfft.

The problem with putting an ircd on windows isnt the stability of the OS, but what the system is used for.

Most people who run an ircd or any other kind of server on windows are also physically sitting *at the machine*. This means, to be blunt, that when that user gets bored of irc and goes off to do something, whatever they do directly impacts upon the irc network. For example: "i'm bored now, i'm off to play unreal tournament 2004." User loads up unreal tournament 2004, goes to an online server and gets a few frags. While he's playing, network latency jumps up quite severely. Of course, most users only have cable modems, adsl, sdsl if theyre lucky. This means that while hes away from IRC doing other stuff, hes causing detrimental performance to the irc server by consuming all the bandwidth, similar in effect to a small DDOS. Note that the same will occur if you go to download large files from internet explorer, and if you load a filesharing program such as limewire or emule, you can kiss that bandwidth goodbye Smile

Lets now compare this to a shell server or a co-located server, where those who are able to will run an ircd. The shell servers load will be at most, a complement of 20 ircds, eggdrops, bncs etc. The server has a total burstable bandwidth of at least 10, maybe 100 megabits a second. This is a LOT of bandwidth. Not only that but it is designed to pre-emptively run background processes (as windows server products are, but windows DESKTOP products are not!) and it has no gui. This means that it can easily process the requests of these 20 or more daemons without needing cpu time left over to render windows, make you a coffee, or whatever else windows may be doing.

In short, it is not the fact that "it is windows", or the programs running on it, its two things:

(1) The usage patterns of the system
(2) The design of the system (e.g. if you must use windows, use a server product such as windows 2003 server).

shizzle.

A friendly note, that applies for LINUX desktops also :p
..and if Im not mistaking, there is a way to run some desktop programs as a bgprocess in windows.. atleast Ive seen this feature in XP pro, but I cant remember if it was a tweak program or a system feature.

yup, its called running a process as a service, and it does improve stability a little but youre still sharing your bandwidth and your cpu time with the desktop, and any games, word processors, or whatever else you choose to run. Same goes for a background process on a unix machine running X.

I remember, when i first started out on IRC, i used IRCPlus (please don't hurt me) to create a basic network between me and a few friends.. why did we do it? because we could. I then went off to play UT, and mass mayhem occured.UT bailed.. and took my computer down with it, along with the IRCd.

This kinda prooves exactly what brain says Very Happy

Although you CAN get dedicated Windows machines, these are much better equipt for IRC Networks than desktop windows machine Wink

I am using Unreal Win32 with Anope on my Windows 2003 machine for test... its working... and stable as like linux. but how can i start Anope as service? if there is no way to run anope as a service then win32 IRCd is not very good for any irc network i think.

btw... may be there is some solution.. if anybody know it.. please mail me at admin@trivuz.com please.

thanks

Hmm, A while back I asked the same question of myself, and found FireDaemon; did a pretty good job, pity it was only a 21-day trial Sad
But thanks for pointing out the WRK, brain

Is anyone here going to dare to admit they run an ircd for a production network off a Windows box? Smile

Hell, even I wouldn't admit that LoL

I have to say, running services and getting them to link on windows is a pain in the ass. I remember one time, I was idling in an IRC help channel, and there were about a thousand help requests for setting up an ircd and services on a windows box...it really got annoying after a while, so I can see why the topic is so taboo these days.

*Admits*

I played with unreal on a win box just to learn the codes and how to use commands before I started with anything. I even linked anope with it. Took me some time but I learned unreal/anope inside out.

But the networks I oper on all use *nix. As said somewhere above, you would be crazy to use a win box for a production network.

This is incorrect. You can check with /INFO on their servers. Their servers run on linux and FreeBSD. There are other networks which run Conferenceroom on Windows.

To the question of which IRC server software is the best for Windows, the answer is Conferenceroom.

Other IRC server software aren't properly programmed for use on Windows.
