Spamming on IRC networks is messaging users and/or joining channels to send unsolicited advertisements - for example:
message from Jenny17-
<Jenny17> Hi, please check out my sexy pix http://blahblahblah.blah. I am soooo hot for you to see my wet naked bodeeeee!!!!!!!!!!
or
***nitwit joins channel #help
nitwit: Join #nitwit now!!!!!!!!! Everyone gets ops!!!!!!!!!!
nitwit: Join #nitwit now!!!!!!!!! Everyone gets ops!!!!!!!!!!
nitwit: Join #nitwit now!!!!!!!!! Everyone gets ops!!!!!!!!!!
nitwit: Join #nitwit now!!!!!!!!! Everyone gets ops!!!!!!!!!!
nitwit: Join #nitwit now!!!!!!!!! Everyone gets ops!!!!!!!!!!
Spamming is usually rewarded with a ban.
Spamming on SearchIRC is posting a channel or network name in the forum topics in order to publicize that network. For example:
Latest Forum Postings:
LameIRCNet needs opers
LameIRCNet needs scripters
LameIRCNet needs users!!!
LameIRCNet invites everyone to join!
Love on IRC?
LameIRCNet adds another server!!!
LameIRCNet adds a server!!!!
LameIRCNet is now open!
LameIRCNet to open soon!
When we first put up the forums, we really didn't have a problem with IRC nets or channels posting their name in their topic. But this was quickly abused. So now we have to forbid names in the topic line. :( Mention your network/channel all you want in the body of the post, but lets keep our latest forum posting lists clean.
We do have something in the works for IRC networks to promote themselves better... news on this will be coming soon! |

We assume anyone posting the name of their network/channel simply hasn't read the rules. When we see it, we just delete the name in the topic line. Its not a big thing unless it turns into an ugly habit.
Of course, some people spam away and then continue on to do other things that result in their posts being deleted and their user account being suspended. I guess his parents couldn't afford Charm School. ;) |
