Anybody else running Nefarious IRCd?

It was a shock to me that searchirc.com lists 2 networks as running Nefarious: AfterNET and HazeNET, the latter being the one I am representing. Further along those lines, netsplit.de only lists AfterNET as running nefarious. Is there anybody else out there that uses this ircd? I just want to get together with some other admins/owners that use this software.

I'm running Nefarious as a test server - we'll be switching to it in the near future. At the moment we are running bahamut.

We use Unreal, and are reasonably happy with it... I won't be switching, since I know unreal protocol fairly well (so I can write winse with ease! Razz)

The primary reason to run nefarious is to get the advantages of the rock solid IRCU and try to add a few (poorly coded) features to it. Many of these new features will be standard in the new version or IRCU 2.10.12.x (however they wont include those stupid abusive ones almost exclusive to unreal networks) Nefarious is a mess of different patches from different networks, and they are trying to get them all to work together. There are like 3+ different types of hostmasking supported by it, because they dont know which service your running. My advice is to wait for the new version of ircu, apply the specific patch for whatever services your running, and avoid the bugs and headaches of nefarious.

Yet another person bitching about "abusive unreal". Well, let me pose you a question. Name me 5 features that are abusive, and limited to Unreal, and I'll bet you that they either arent limited, or can be implemented via services in other IRCds.

/kill for instance. Gee, that's abusive. And guess what, it isnt limited to Unreal.

No matter what software you have, people will find ways to abuse it. So stop trying to take the moral highground, thanks.

Sorry if this is taken as a flame, but I've seen so MANY of these posts, I finally feel obligated to put my viewpoint forwards.

w00t, I have nothing against Unreal. It actually handles connections quite well, and cooperates with the operating system as well. I did my tests with FreeBSD and it handled very well.

Talrias, let me know when you guys switch to Nefarious, please Smile

Logical- Exactly. These claims are unfounded... From looking at the DF sourcecode, I can see that Unreal has changed quite a bit...

Claims which you havent seen cannot be justified as unfounded, others may have experienced bad sides to unreal that you havent.

Unreal doesn't have any abusive features. However, it has features that can be abused. This is why administators should choose good administrators for their servers, and not hand privileges out to everyone they see. A good administrator gives O:lines to people he or she trusts.

I've been on IRC for 5 years, and 4 networks and in this time as a helper/IRC oper/Server admin, and trust, responsibility & experience is vital amongst your staff, from the large & small networks I have been privledged to be asked onto as a staff member.

Working with Unreal I have no problems with that, what may suit one, may not suit the other as at the end of the day which ever IRCd version your running then thats your choice on your network and I respect that.

I chose to run nefarious since I am a past user of boxen, evilnet and boxen merged to become nefarious. Before I ran either, I was using basic IRCu from undernet, but I like the extra features which nefarious has to offer IRCu and support for it is slowly being added into NeoStats. I hope nefarious is around to stay for a while, as I will always run it long as it's in dev.

No doubt, I actually dislike the Unreal linking and server->server stuff, I seem to be able to make it core... but dont know how yet Smile (it happens at random).

My point was that I read so many posts of people spouting photostat crap about how abusive, bloated, useless, etc etc etc Unreal is. If you don't like a feature, then don't load it. Don't load commands.so, load the modules you want rather than the whole lot.

You see my point? I see quite a lot of people just throwing unfounded accusations around. When they start showing some concrete evidence of their point of view, then perhaps I will consider changing mine.
