Well for one, it's better to make the transition to dedicated servers if you have an irc network with a few different servers and you want a better service.

We (WikkedWire) did and it rocks.

(Plus we keep two other shells for redundancy)

This is a commonly misunderstood myth. Since a dedicated server can (and usually does) run the exact same software, specifically the Operating System, ircd and even the hardware. The quality of the perfomance is the responsibility of the person that Admins it. Meaning that if it's a crappy admin .. then the performance will most likely be crappy and the exact opposite is true. So with that said quality is on the knowledge of the Admin and the quality of the bandwidth.

Just because you have a shell account doesn't automaticlly make the service crappy.

Just because you have a dedicated server doesn't autmaticlly make the service any 'better'.

congrats! However, lets pretend your upstream provider makes a few small mistakes or bad judgement calls and your new loud and proud dedicated server starts pinging out all the time and experiencing noticable packet loss ... guess what .. your service just got crappy and wouldn't be any better than some shell providers and/or worse than other shell providers.

I'm not saying any of that.. I'm just saying what happened to us.

For example, we were like 90% lomag, and we kept having ping outs and netsplits out the uh.. wazoo.

Well, we were tired of it so we found a better solution: a dedicated server.

It may not be cheaper, but we have total control of it so if something happens, we (I am) are to blame.

This is only a solution for people that need a stable service and know what they're doing. (I don't know what I'm doing, but that's another story)

That's very odd about your lomag statement, I've been with Lomag since 98-99 time frame and very very rarely had a server ping out.

As for the rest of my statement it wasn't aimed specifically at you. It was a reply to the statement you made indicating that if you want better Service, get a dedicated server. That statement isn't always true. Sure you now have root and control over one box. What about the other admins? The SysAdmins of your provider? The Admins of their backbone provider? All that your in control of now that you wasnt before is the box it's self and it takes alot more than that to insure stability. That's just 1 variable in a hundred that is required to insure total stability.

If you want more say in stability get a co-location. It's true that you still only control your box .. but the difference is it YOUR box, if you don't like the backbone .. move your box elsewhere.

Good Luck with your server though.

Yea, it it only happened like a couple months ago but just kept happening, so I assume someone kept attacking them. Well, the didn't have the hardware to handle it, but I guess they do now?

yes, a couple of months ago they replaced several pieces of hardware, perhaps the very hardware that caused your experiences, who knows. I'm thankful that I didn't have your problems and the only "rough ride" I experienced was a few reboots.
