I've found that illegal file sharing keeps increasing terribly, and so fast. What I have a problem iwht is, whats next, is IRC going to be shot to hell by the RIAA or whatever? Though, they can try, but i'm almost certain if they are found out, they would get a ban from more channels imaginable.. just though i'd bring this up

The RIAA's already been snooping around large IRC networks.

Banned from channels, maybe, banned from servers, less likely. I know if I had a server and someone proved to me they were from the RIAA I'd hand over the IPs of everyone sharing mp3s. Send them all to jail, that's where criminals are supposed to be anyway.

Some have been banned from the network I'm opered on, despite the fact we have a strict anti-warez policy. The've been informed that they're welcome to work with us, but as yet we've had no reply.

Guess they prefer snooping. :)

magpie, well remember that IRC is full of liars. I remember a time when an FBI agent came to my IRC server and demanded a users IP for an ongoing investigation. I told him I'd be glad to comply if he could prove his identity by giving me his name and badge number so I could confirm it with my local FBI office. At this point he disconnected and never returned. Who he really was, I have no idea, but he wasn't an FBI agent.

codemastr: It's not a question of lying, although I agree many people do. They were simply on a Media Sentry netblock, couldn't be more obvious. :)

pR0sp3ct, "yo mah fren, y don u go lrn s0me inglesh"

Do you have a second grade education? Because that's how you sound when you talk like that.

Comparing the RIAA to Hitler is an insult to all those people who died in World War II, you should be ashamed of yourself. You are comparing an organization that wants to protect their own rights, to a man who killed millions of people for the simple fact that they existed. That is appalling. You really should be ashamed of yourself.

If you feel that this is "freedom," then here is what I want you to do. I want you to hire a lawyer, and I want you to sign all of your assets over to me. Because that's what you're saying freedom is. Freedom, to you, is the responsibility of people to give away everything they own. That's what you want the RIAA to do. You want them to give you the music. So then give me your car, your house, everything you have, and then I'll agree that you really do believe it is freedom.

Well heres my opinion, and its worth what ya paid. Thank God I live up north of the border where the CRIAA has lost every case in court hands down. We pay a tariff on blank cds whether they are used for music, or just backing up my computer. So the Supreme Court found they were already being paid for the music. As for the isp's handing over the ips of users, they lost that case in court too. Something about it being an infringment of our constitutional rights. I'm sure you have those down south too. As for mp3's , I prefer dvd-audio. Clarity and a sense of space work better for me. But as in the warez/no warez debate, this all comes down to personal choices by each user. And those choices like all choices in life " can ' have consequenses. Nuff said. Wink

But what about the people who use rooted bots and anonymous dumpsites, not really much to do about that. Happens a lot and if the hacker is good enough to cover their tracks, nothing anyone can do about it except shut the bots down. But everytime one goes down, 3 more come up. I don't see the point in why they try anymore.

Btw, I voted yes to this.

I'd venture to say that 80%+ of the self-proclaimed "hackers" out there can't cover their tracks well enough that a security specialist couldn't discover it. Problem is, 90% of the machines in the world don't have their own security specialist.
