I see IRC as a get away form the mainstream of internet chat and i think there are plenty of others that would agree with me, Its simple stable( to and extent) and is free from main stream companys that tend to ruin the experience of the internet, So my overall conclusion is that IRC's future is as bright as it will ever be.

The future of IRC appears to be very repetitive, yes we have ppl running annoying mass denial of service attacks and loads on servers that are part of larger networks like quakenet or freenode. This makes some IRCops eventually just say, its not worth it! That combined with useless internet drama that seems to be instrumental in destroying everything innovative and useful on the internet. I'm afraid there isn't much we can do as individuals, server owners, or members of a like-minded community. Technical support and coders working together through an svn repository to combat the spread of open proxy abuse. There are many ways, but something this large would likely require funding.

I think the future of IRC has arrived. Users ddosing users over something small is pointless. People take things far to seriously these days. Take me for a instance. People are saying stuff about me just to wreck my rep. Half of it which isnt true. Come on people get the facts right. Travis needs people to take people out mean while it was a bloody joke. Now people are harrasing users when they said to stop it. This is mainly why i quit a year and half ago. Irc is drama heaven now. People should respect people and treat them the way people should be treated. On my behave i would like to say sorry for any drama i started. However IRC seems to be just a place for script kiddies these days. So once again i think that the Future of IRC is here today

I would tend to agree with Adam. If anything will kill irc, it'll be the generations that do it. The next generation may find something "bigger and better" and that would make irc become more of a past-tense or old fad so to speak. Trends, popular things, change so much over five or ten years, who knows what will be next.

I agree with some of things being said here, I think irc is slowling dying off or is not as popular at the moment as it used to be. our network has always been small because I did not promote it. we been around now for about 4 years and we have noticed users come and going. I hear right now that the myspace is whats popular or the newest craze.
