I don't think that IRC is going anywhere. As long as there are the networks, people will still come. I do find IRC more fragmented nowadays though, with everyone starting their own networks and all.

Everyone splitting off into all the different networks might end up being irc's undoing. It so fragments everything and everyone.

irc is a zombie-hydra-monster-dude-guy-thing

it's pretty much like a nation in mid stages of what one would call anarchy. Many unruly areas, but there are still those few great oasis(don't know the plural for it! Mad) that you can go to. It will be an extremely long time before IRC dies. And even then when it dies people will still use it.
