I guess some people are just stupid enough to trust people from the start. =\

This is the routing application that we use on our network. Feel free to modify for your usage. It gets the important information regarding their IRCD. Of course, being familiar with who is asking to link is important too. As others have said in this thread, link people you don't know that well at your own peril. It amazes me the number of people who ask for a link that have been on our network for a couple of days.

    P2P-IRC Routing Application

Peer To Peer IRC network is founded on the principle of being welcoming to all users. The linking of a new server is taken seriously and we carefully ensure that a new link will benefit the network. This routing application provides us with the bare minimum of information to determine if you and your server meet our requirements. We will have additional questions!

Please complete each section fully, incomplete applications will automatically be denied. Send your answers to routing.at.nospam.p2p-irc.net.

    1. Contact information
    a. Server Admin Nick:
    b. Server Admin e-mail:
    c. Date your nick was registered on P2P-IRC (30 day mininum):
    d. Relationship to server hardware and network (ie: employee, co-lo, customer, student account, etc):
    e. Sysadmin Contact:
    f. Server name:

    2. Connectivity
NOTE: Home connections are not allowed to link with P2P-IRC. Shell accounts are subject to review.
    a. Link speed:
    b. Major uplink carriers used:
    c. DDoS protection (filtering or null route):
    d. Provide traceroutes to the following; <list of servers would go here> (you will most likely not be able to resolve the last hop due to ICMP blocking)
    e. Provide IP address that you intend to use for linking:

    3. Machine information
    a. Processor
    b. OS (*nix only) and version (uname -a):
    c. RAM:
    d. Who else has access to run processes?:
    e. List nameservers in resolv.conf:
    f. What other services are running on the machine? (ftp, www, smtp etc)

    4. Free answer
    a. Please describe while you feel that your server would be a benefit to P2P-IRC and the communities that use P2P-IRC as their IRC network of choice.
    b. Do you have any IRCops in mind? (list)
    c. How much active time do you estimate you could devote to P2P-IRC a week? Be realistic.
    d. Please provide proof that you have permission to run an IRCD on the server and network infrastructure. Please include a contact e-mail address should we need to verify or a link to the providers Acceptable Use Policy.
    e. How much experience do you have running an IRCD? Which networks (if any) have you been linked with?

I don't know about anyone else, but I certainly don't have the kind of access to fill that out, nor would I want to. (IP addresses, traceroutes, etc.)

You're not able to provide an IP of the linking server or a traceroute from it? I bet you have a pretty good success rate with your link applications then. :)

I bet if you went and looked at 99.9% of all networks who actually have a link application i bet they require an ip adress and traceroutes.

AthemeNet's linkapp is somewhat similar: http://www.atheme.net/routing/linkapp.txt

I'm not going to be rude and paste it though.

Most networks I have been on that I stay around on do have strict policies and conduct tests for linking servers. Also there is a time limit of monitoring the server before accepting it totally in the pool.

It was a good idea to post this topic though to show that those who are new to the IRC networking business see what kinds of things can happen if they are not careful. It is easy to want to trust people and of course, the desire to see a network grow is great. Unfortunately, there are always some that will take advantage of others and that is why definitely make rules regarding linkage and test for proper solid ip links and trace routes. Also, another suggestion may be to keep the person around first as an IRCop in training so you see the behavior that person has with users and staff alike. Usually people show colors just through time being with them and if you don't mesh, you can refuse to move on with other things.
