I've seen both view points.
I, personally, have a link to both my site and server in my quit message, and don't feel it's spamming.
What do you think? |

If you come on and quit like a normal person (ie, every once in a while) ok, I'd let that slide.
If you come on and off constantly, joining as many channels as you can and do it many times, you're spamming.
But, its up to the determination of the person who sees it. I've seen akills issued before for it on my network, and since I don't really like someone coming onto my network and using resources I and others on my network pay for to spam another network, I don't mind seeing them be akilled either.
So I guess if you wanted my honest opinion, I would say no, I view your quit message as spam. It would probably be less offensive if you just listed the website. But if your quit message is "this network sucks, go to /server irc.blah.com" then you're definetely spamming also.
Depends on the message and how often you do it, and where you do it, I guess. |

I guess it can be marked as spam, like U said, uppon normal behaviour it's just a quit msg
I've never akilled a person for that reason. Everybody is entitled to do what they like with their connection, it is up to the Opers / admins to decide
only when connect / join max channels / deconnect X 50 times, they'll fly |

If you advertise other networks in your quit messages then you are spamming - even your own personal website, that could be viewed as the same, because 9 times out of 10 you have the main network where you are chatting listed on your site - some do - some dont.
Im permanently on 2 nets, but I like to visit other nets too, so my quit message tends to be just a quote.
Of course Guardserv is a pain, I get disconnected. lol
You were killed by GuardServ (FocusIRC.com!GuardServ (Failed oper attempt [1 of 1 attempts] by client.))
Not changing my mIRC settings, so any network with guardserv will disconnect me.

There are ways to prevent Quit msg spamming,
Some IRCd's have setting that are optional, that will allow you to have a static quit msg. Thought most irc network choose not to use them, this option is avalable on some IRCds.

| actually it's not hard to remove from the source code so that any IRCd could in effect have "static quits". |

| It all depends on what the link is about and how often it is used. if it's for another network it's spam. It's not hard to stop spam in quit msgs though if you need to. |

| personally i've set the network i run up so that any spam in quit messages are automatically changed to something else so no one see's the actual spam, but those without spam can still use any quit message they like |

It's rather easy to make any ircd have "static quit messages." Anyways, back to the orginal question. It greatly depends on the network's policies and the oper who happens to come across it. On one of the networks I oper on they consider: "Excessive use of /quit messages to advertise channels, web sites, IRC servers, scripts, etc." spam, which is usually followed by an autokill.
Personally, I think it's fine if you use it sparingly -- i.e. your a normal user and usually stay connected for a fairly good amount of time. I would define excessive as quitting every few minutes simply to display your URLs .. same for channel part messages.

There are patches out there that do this for ircu too. As most of the other people have said, they're pretty trivial modifications to ircds. |

Just tell your client not to link web addresses in quits.
I've even gone so far to client-side block those annoying HydraIRC default quits, and any quit with color in it. Though if I ever saw people spam websites in their quits more often, I'd be one step away from adding *http://* to the list... |
